What is Local Food Sovereignty?
Food sovereignty emphasizes the rights of people to control their own food systems, including the production, distribution, and consumption of food. It advocates for local and community-based food production that is sustainable, culturally appropriate, and socially just. Food sovereignty prioritizes the needs of small-scale farmers, indigenous communities, and marginalized groups, aiming to ensure access to healthy and nutritious food for all while respecting environmental sustainability and social equity. This concept stands in contrast to food security, which primarily focuses on ensuring a consistent food supply but may not address issues of control and equity within the food system.
To be eligible for funding, your project must incorporate two or more of the core Foundation components aimed at achieving direct community impact. The inclusion of additional components will enhance the project's overall score. These core components include:
Water, Energy, and Food Nexus Integration:
Demonstrate a comprehensive approach to addressing the interconnected issues of water, energy, and food security within communities.
Promotion of Biodiversity, Regeneration, and Nature-Based Solutions:
Prioritize the conservation and restoration of natural ecosystems, with a focus on promoting biodiversity, re-wilding, and nature-based solutions.
Inclusion of Indigenous and Marginalized Communities:
Actively involve Indigenous communities and/or other marginalized groups, including refugees, in project planning, implementation, and decision-making processes.
Sustainability and Climate Resilience:
Incorporate sustainability principles and climate adaptation/mitigation strategies to enhance community resilience and reduce environmental risks.
Preservation of Indigenous Seeds and Cultivation of Native Crops:
Initiatives aimed at preserving indigenous seeds and promoting the cultivation of native crops to support food security and cultural heritage preservation.
Promotion of Community Engagement and Empowerment:
Prioritize community engagement and empowerment, fostering active participation and ownership among community members in project activities.
Integration of Agricultural Innovation and Technology:
Leverage agricultural innovation and technology to enhance productivity, efficiency, and sustainability within local farming systems.
